Dr. Jack E, Taunton, the director of the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre
at the University of British Columbia, and Dr. Doug B. Clement, the principal
founder of the centre, conducted a landmark study of Farabloc, focused on delayed
onset muscle pain.
This work was nationally honored by the CANADIAN ACADEMY
OF SPORTS MEDICINE as the most outstanding study of the year 1998. The citation
praised both the design and the execution of the research project.
Biographical notes: Dr. Doug B. Clement
Dr. Clement is a physician, athlete and sports medicine pioneer. He was
an accomplished rugby player and a track athlete who secured a silver medal
at the 1954 British Empire Games and who competed in both the 1952 and
1956 Olympics.
He is presently a member of the Canadian Olympic Committee
and Professor Emeritus at the University of British Columbia. He and his
wife Diane founded prominent track clubs and what would become the internationally-renowned
Harry Jerome Track Classic.
According to the British Columbia Encyclopedia,
Dr. Clement is "recognized around the world as an innovator in sports
medicine and has earned the Sports Medicine Council Lifetime Achievement
Award and the Order of Canada. He has guided more than 10 athletes to the
Olympics, including 1984 bronze medallist Lynn Williams."
